A properly balanced barefoot hoof is always better but not always possible. Shoes are placed for wear, protection, traction and/or correction. Most performance horses require shoes for these reasons. Here a few examples of ways to help sore horses and performance horses with specialty shoes.
bubble pad: Places the weight in the center of the foot so the horse can adjust the foot to land and move how it needs it to. Sometimes works when the diagnosis is IDK.
roller motion shoe: Allows breakover in any direction. This is often used for ringbone type issues
Rodeo hind: allows the horse to have traction while driving but be able to stop and slide.
Some horses need to have the frog engaged to allow them to utilize the caudal aspect of the foot. This also shows a half-round shoe which allows for easy breakover as needed. This horse shows slight navicular changes.
